What is WIC?
WIC is the common name for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. WIC provides healthy supplemental foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and other services.

The WIC Program was established in 1974 to reduce infant mortality and improve the health of our nation’s children. Today, the WIC Program is considered one of the most successful, cost-effective and important nutrition intervention programs in the country. The Westchester County Department of Health WIC Program has been proudly providing WIC services to the community since 1979.

Who is eligible for WIC?
Pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children up to 5 years of age may be eligible if they live in New York State and meet the WIC income guidelines . The maximum income for WIC eligibility may be higher than that for Food Stamps or Public Assistance and persons who are not eligible for these programs may still be eligible for WIC.

What does WIC offer?

The mission of  WIC is to protect and support the health of pregnant women, postpartum mothers, infants, and children up to age 5. Services include:

  • Nutritional Support: WIC provides healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, beans, whole grains and dairy or soy, to supplement diets.
  • Education & Counseling: WIC offers personalized nutrition education and breastfeeding support.
  • Service Referrals: WIC helps connect families to healthcare, Medicaid, SNAP, and other community resources.

The WIC Program Promotes and Supports Breastfeeding
WIC families can seek breastfeeding support and guidance from the Program's nutrition staff, Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC) and Peer Counselors. Breast pumps are available for breastfeeding women enrolled in WIC after a breastfeeding assessment is completed.

For infants who need supplemental formula, a variety of formulas are available. Specialized formulas are available for infants with qualifying medical conditions (requires Medical Documentation). Infant formula packages are tailored at each visit to meet the infant's current growth and developmental needs. Supplemental foods may be provided for infants beginning at six months of age.

WIC Participants Receive a Convenient eWIC Card to Purchase Nutritious Foods
WIC benefits are now loaded onto an eWIC card during WIC appointments. An eWIC card is like a debit card and is used to buy WIC approved foods at WIC approved stores. eWIC shoppers can expect an easier check-out, a more discreet transaction, and the freedom to spread out WIC purchases.

Check out the NYS eWIC Card Guide brochure, available in English and Spanish.

Referrals for Health Care and Other Services
WIC provides screening and referrals to other health and social service programs.
